What happened
Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic, confirmed in mid-May 2026. He started that week. Karpathy is one of the best known names in AI. He was a founding member of OpenAI in 2015. He then left to lead AI work at Tesla. He came back to OpenAI in 2023, then left about a year later to start his own education company, Eureka Labs.
Anthropic did not share his exact role. The hire was widely covered as a sign of the talent race among top labs.
Why it matters
Top researchers are scarce and in high demand. Where they go signals where the work and the money are flowing. Karpathy is also a popular teacher, with a large following for his clear explanations of how models work.
