Perplexity Launches Personal Computer for Mac
Perplexity launched Personal Computer on April 16, 2026. It is a new agent feature in the Perplexity Mac app that takes on multi-step tasks across the user's local files, other Mac apps, and the web.
What It Does
Perplexity has been a search and research tool for most of its life. Personal Computer is a shift into desktop automation. Users can ask Perplexity to pull together information from files on their computer, open apps, and run web tasks in one sequence. The agent keeps the user in the loop by showing each step and pausing when it needs approval for sensitive actions.
Example Tasks
Typical jobs include pulling numbers from a local spreadsheet, searching the web for updated figures, drafting a summary in the user's writing app, and sending it off through email or chat. Without Personal Computer, these steps would span four or five tools.
Why It Matters
OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are all pushing desktop agent experiences. Perplexity's move shows that the same pressure reaches companies that started with search. For the Mac user market, this also signals that general-purpose desktop orchestration is moving from research demos to shipping products.
