Google Launches Native Gemini Desktop App for macOS
Google released a native Gemini desktop app for macOS 15 on April 17, 2026. The app gives Mac users quick access to Gemini without switching to a browser tab.
How It Works
Users can call up Gemini anywhere with the Option plus Space shortcut. A small panel opens on top of the current app. Users can share any open window with Gemini for context, which means Gemini can answer questions about a PDF, a spreadsheet, a design file, or a code editor without the user copying content by hand.
The app also connects to Google's image generation feature, Nano Banana, and its video generation feature, Veo. Both can be triggered inside the same panel.
Why It Matters
Mac users have had Gemini in the browser, but a native app with a global hotkey and window sharing changes the workflow. It is a direct answer to ChatGPT's Mac app and to smaller tools like Raycast AI. For knowledge workers, this turns Gemini into an always-on assistant that sits next to whatever app they are in.
