What happened

Google opened its I/O 2026 developer event on May 19 with Gemini 3.5 Flash. It is the first model in Google's latest series, built to combine strong reasoning with the ability to act inside apps. Google says Flash delivers quality close to large flagship models but at the speed people expect from the Flash line.

Google also said Gemini 3.5 Flash outperforms the older Gemini 3.1 Pro on tough coding and agent tests. A larger Gemini 3.5 Pro is already in use inside Google and is planned to roll out the following month.

Why it matters

Fast, cheap models do most of the day to day work for developers and apps. A Flash model that scores higher than last year's Pro model changes the math for many products. Teams can run more steps, longer chains, and more users at lower cost.

The launch also marks Google's push into agent style models that do not just answer but take action under user direction.

MintedBrain take

For builders, the headline is value. If Flash really matches older Pro quality at Flash speed and price, it becomes a strong default for chatbots, coding helpers, and automation. Watch for the Gemini 3.5 Pro release next, which should set the new high end for Google.
