Reports surfaced on April 24, 2026 that Mistral and xAI held partnership talks. Euronews and other outlets said the two companies discussed ways to combine forces against OpenAI and Anthropic. The talks are described as early and no deal has been confirmed by either company.
Why it matters
A deal could form a third pole in frontier AI. Mistral brings a strong European base and a deep open-weight model line. xAI brings large-scale compute ambitions and the Grok model line. Together they would have both the research strength and the compute to push closer to OpenAI and Anthropic.
