Write a YouTube Script With ChatGPT (Step-by-Step)

Use ChatGPT to go from a rough topic idea to a complete, ready-to-record YouTube script in under 30 minutes.

Prerequisites

  • ChatGPT account (free or Plus)
  • A topic idea or keyword you want to make a video about

Step 1: Start with a brief, not just a topic

Before prompting, write a quick internal brief (2-3 sentences):

  • What is the video about?
  • Who is the audience?
  • What should they know or do after watching?

Example: "Video about how freelancers can use AI to write client proposals faster. Audience: new freelancers. Goal: they understand 3 AI tools and know how to use them."

This brief becomes the foundation of your prompt.

Step 2: Generate the outline first

Prompt:

"Create a YouTube video outline for: [your topic]. Audience: [who they are]. Goal: [what they'll learn or do]. Include: a hook, 3-5 main sections with subpoints, and a CTA. Format it clearly with section headers."

Review the outline before going to full script. This is the moment to adjust structure, reorder sections, or cut weak points. It's much faster to edit an outline than a full script.

Step 3: Write the hook

The hook (first 30-60 seconds) is the most important part of the script. Prompt separately:

"Write 3 different hook options for this YouTube video: [topic]. Each hook should open with a surprising statement, question, or counterintuitive claim. Keep each hook under 60 words. Audience: [who they are]."

Pick the strongest hook or combine elements from multiple options.

Step 4: Write each section

Prompt each section separately for the best quality:

"Write the '[Section Name]' section of this YouTube script. Here's the outline point: [paste the outline point]. Tone: conversational, direct, no filler phrases. Length: 200-300 words. Write it as spoken script, not an article."

Key instruction: "Write it as spoken script, not an article." Without this, ChatGPT writes text that reads awkwardly when spoken aloud.

Step 5: Write the CTA

"Write a YouTube video CTA for this video: [topic]. Include: subscribe ask, comment prompt (ask a specific question they can answer), and a tease for the next video. Keep it under 60 words. Conversational."

Step 6: Assemble and read it aloud

Paste all sections into a Google Doc. Read it out loud from start to finish. This is the most important step. You'll immediately hear:

  • Sentences that are too long to say in one breath
  • Phrasing that sounds written, not spoken
  • Spots where transitions are awkward

Edit what your mouth tells you doesn't work. The AI draft is a starting point, not a final product.

Prompt Tips

  • Add "no filler phrases like 'in today's video' or 'without further ado'" to every script prompt
  • Ask for "short paragraphs—2-3 sentences max" for spoken clarity
  • If a section isn't working, try: "Rewrite this section in a more direct, punchy style with shorter sentences"
  • For technical topics: "Explain this like you're talking to a smart beginner who has never done this before"

Common Mistake

Skipping the outline review step and jumping to full script. The AI will produce a perfectly written script for the wrong structure. Fix the structure first; then generate the script.
