Summarize Anything in 3 Steps

Ever stared at a long article or dense report and thought, "I just need the key points — I don't have time for all of this"? AI can read it for you and pull out exactly what matters. This tutorial shows you how to summarize anything in under a minute, using a free tool you can access right now in your browser.

Who this is for: Complete beginners who want a practical, instant way to save time on reading.

What you'll walk away with: The ability to summarize any article, report, or document in seconds.

What You Need

  • A web browser
  • Access to ChatGPT (chatgpt.com) or Perplexity (perplexity.ai) — both are free
  • A piece of text you want to summarize (an article, email, PDF, or any long document)

Step 1: Copy the Text You Want to Summarize

First, grab the text you want to shorten.

For a web article:

  1. Click anywhere on the page.
  2. Press Ctrl+A (Windows) or Cmd+A (Mac) to select all the text.
  3. Press Ctrl+C (Windows) or Cmd+C (Mac) to copy it.

For a PDF document:

  1. Open the PDF in your browser or a PDF reader.
  2. Click on the text, then press Ctrl+A / Cmd+A to select all.
  3. Press Ctrl+C / Cmd+C to copy. (Note: some PDFs don't allow text selection if they're scanned images — in that case, copy section by section, or try a different tool like Adobe Acrobat.)

For an email:

  1. Click inside the email body.
  2. Press Ctrl+A / Cmd+A to select all, then Ctrl+C / Cmd+C to copy.

✅ You're done with Step 1 when: You have the text copied to your clipboard (you won't see anything change on screen — it's saved invisibly).

Step 2: Paste the Text Into an AI Tool

Open a new browser tab and go to chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai.

Click in the chat/message box and press Ctrl+V (Windows) or Cmd+V (Mac) to paste your copied text. You'll see the full text appear in the box.

Don't press Enter yet! You need to add your instruction first (that's Step 3).

✅ You're done with Step 2 when: You can see the full article or document text pasted into the chat box.

Step 3: Ask for the Summary

After pasting the text, add your instruction on the same line (or a new line right after the text). Here are ready-to-use requests:

  • "Summarize this in 5 bullet points."
  • "Give me the 3 most important takeaways in 2 sentences each."
  • "What is the main argument of this article?"
  • "Explain this like I'm 10 years old." (great for technical content)

Then press Enter (or click the send button). Within a few seconds, you'll have a clean, clear summary.

✅ You're done with Step 3 when: The AI has responded with a concise summary of your content.

Going Deeper: Follow-Up Questions

The AI remembers the content you pasted, so you can keep asking questions:

  • "Expand on the second point." — Get more detail on one section.
  • "What questions does this leave unanswered?" — Identify gaps.
  • "What action should I take based on this?" — Get practical recommendations.
  • "Make it shorter." — Condense an already-short summary.

Tips for Best Results

  • If the text is very long (more than 5,000 words), some tools may not handle it in one go. In that case, summarize in chunks — paste one section at a time and ask for a summary, then combine.
  • For articles with a URL, Perplexity can sometimes summarize directly from the link — try pasting just the URL and asking "Summarize this article."
  • Not happy with the result? Try being more specific: "Summarize in exactly 3 sentences, focusing on the statistics mentioned."

Troubleshooting

"The text is too long to paste" → Try summarizing section by section (introduction, middle, conclusion), then ask AI to combine the summaries.

"The summary missed the main point" → Rephrase: "What is the single most important thing this article is saying?"

"The PDF won't let me copy text" → The PDF may be a scanned image. Try copying just a visible paragraph, or use a tool like Adobe Acrobat to extract text.
