Create a Faceless AI Presenter Video With HeyGen

Use HeyGen to create a professional presenter-style video from a script—without appearing on camera, hiring a presenter, or recording audio.

Prerequisites

  • HeyGen account (free trial: 1 credit/video; paid plan for production use)
  • A written script (1-5 minutes of narration)
  • Optional: your own video for avatar creation

Step 1: Choose your avatar

HeyGen offers two avatar types:

Type 1 – Stock avatars: Pre-made presenters you can use immediately. 100+ options in various demographics, styles, and backgrounds. For faceless channels or brand channels where personal identity doesn't matter, stock avatars work well.

Type 2 – Custom avatar (your own likeness): Record a 2-5 minute video of yourself speaking on a neutral background. Upload it to HeyGen → Avatars → Create Avatar. HeyGen trains a model from your footage. Outputs lip-sync your face to any script. This takes 24-48 hours to process.

For getting started quickly, use a stock avatar. Create your custom avatar in the background while you learn the tool.

Step 2: Select a template or start blank

HeyGen → Create Video → Choose:

  • Template: Pre-designed layouts with text overlays, lower thirds, and backgrounds. Good starting point for product explainers, tutorials, and corporate content.
  • Blank: Full control over layout. Better for creators with specific brand requirements.

For first videos, use a template. You can customize everything afterward.

Step 3: Paste your script

In the editor, click the avatar on the left panel → Script tab. Paste your script into the text box.

Script formatting tips:

  • Break into short paragraphs (3-4 sentences max per section). HeyGen processes sections separately, which gives the avatar more natural pause points.
  • Add [pause] where you want the presenter to pause briefly.
  • Spell out numbers and acronyms phonetically if they're unusual: "CEO" is fine; "SERP" might need "S-E-R-P."

Step 4: Choose a voice

Click Voice in the script panel. Options:

  • HeyGen AI voices: Built-in TTS voices. Wide selection, decent quality.
  • ElevenLabs integration: Connect your ElevenLabs account and use your own voice clone or any ElevenLabs voice. This produces significantly better audio quality and is the recommended choice for production-quality output.
  • Upload your own audio: Record narration separately and upload it. HeyGen lip-syncs the avatar to your audio file. Use this if you have a professional voice recording setup.

Recommended: Connect ElevenLabs for voice quality that matches the visual quality of the avatar.

Step 5: Customize the scene

Edit the background, add text overlays, and adjust the avatar position:

  • Background: Upload a custom background image or video, or choose from HeyGen's library. Branded backgrounds (your brand colors, logo) look professional.
  • Text overlays: Add title cards, bullet points, or lower thirds. Use for lists, stats, or step numbers that appear as the presenter talks about them.
  • Avatar size and position: Resize and reposition. Common layouts: full-frame avatar (talking head style), avatar in lower-left corner with content right (explainer style), avatar in circle cutout (news anchor style).

Step 6: Add scenes for multi-section videos

For scripts with multiple distinct sections, add new slides/scenes. Each scene can have:

  • A different background
  • Different text overlays
  • The same avatar continuing to talk

Click Add Scene → paste the next section of the script → the avatar continues seamlessly across scenes.

Step 7: Preview and export

Click Preview to watch the full video. Check:

  • Lip sync accuracy (usually very good, but check on fast sentences)
  • Pacing (is the avatar speaking too fast or too slow for the content?)
  • Text overlay timing (do callouts appear at the right moments?)

If the pacing is off, add more [pause] tags or break the script into smaller chunks. When satisfied, click Export. Export time for a 3-minute video: 3-5 minutes.

Use Cases Where HeyGen Works Best

  • Educational explainer videos – Script-driven, content-focused, no need for personal presenter
  • Product demos – Show the product on screen with the avatar narrating in a corner cutout
  • Multilingual versions – Generate the same video in Spanish, French, Portuguese from one script
  • Training materials – Consistent presenter for course content that doesn't age the creator's appearance

Where It Falls Short

  • Authentic personal brand content – Audiences following you specifically will notice and feel disconnected
  • Emotional or sensitive content – The avatar reads as uncanny valley in emotionally resonant moments
  • Unscripted or conversational content – HeyGen requires a script; spontaneous content needs a real recording
