Batch Create Shorts from Long Videos with Descript

Turn one long video into 10+ short-form clips. Descript's AI finds highlights; you refine and export.

Prerequisites

  • Descript (free or paid)
  • A long-form video (interview, webinar, podcast)

Step 1: Import and transcribe

Import the video. Descript transcribes automatically. Fix any transcription errors—editing the text edits the video (Descript's killer feature).

Step 2: Use AI to find clips

Use "Highlight" or similar AI features. Descript can suggest clips based on: speaker changes, key moments, or manual markers. Or search the transcript for keywords and create clips from those sections.

Step 3: Create a template

Define your short format: 60 seconds, 9:16, with captions. Set up a composition template so each clip follows the same structure.

Step 4: Batch export

Select multiple clips. Export as a batch. Descript will render each as a separate file. Name them by topic or timestamp for easy organization.

Step 5: Add captions and thumbnails

Descript can add captions automatically. For thumbnails, pick a frame or use a template. Export for YouTube Shorts, TikTok, or Reels.

Automation (advanced)

For recurring workflows, explore Descript's API or integrations. Some teams use a pipeline: new video → Descript → extract clips → upload to social. Manual for now; automation is emerging.
