What happened
Anthropic said on June 12 it took its newest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, offline to comply with a US government directive. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter saying the models would be subject to export controls. The government told Anthropic to suspend access for any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, citing national security.
The action followed a claim by another company that it could jailbreak Mythos, which alarmed officials. To ensure compliance, Anthropic had to cut off access for all customers. Anthropic said it believes this is a misunderstanding and is working to restore access as soon as possible.
Why it matters
This is a rare case of the US government directly limiting access to a commercial AI model. It shows how national security concerns are now shaping which AI tools people can use, and where. The disruption also hit paying customers who lost access to a model they had just started using.
The episode adds to a wider clash between Anthropic and parts of the government over AI safety and military use.
MintedBrain take
This is a sign of how tangled AI and government policy have become. For businesses, it is a reminder that access to powerful models can change suddenly due to rules, not just product decisions. If you build on frontier models, it is wise to avoid depending on a single model with no backup. This is general information, not legal advice.
