What happened

Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 stopped being included free in Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscriptions on June 23, ending the complimentary window that opened at its June 9 launch. Using the model now requires paid usage credits at API rates of $10 and $50 per million input and output tokens, roughly double Opus 4.8.

The transition is complicated by the model having been offline from June 12 to about June 18 under a US export-control directive. Anthropic committed to restoring Fable 5 as a standard subscription feature once capacity allows.

Why it matters

A free-to-paid shift, combined with a mid-month outage, disrupts teams that had started building around the model. Pricing at roughly double the prior flagship also reshapes cost planning for heavy users.

The episode accelerated enterprise interest in open-weight alternatives, where availability and pricing are less exposed to a single vendor's capacity and policy constraints.

MintedBrain take

This is a reminder not to hard-wire workflows to a single hosted model during its introductory period. Keep an abstraction layer and a fallback so a pricing change or outage does not stall your team mid-project.
