OpenAI Retires GPT-5.1 Models, Migrates All Users to GPT-5.3 and GPT-5.4

OpenAI announced on March 11, 2026 that it has retired all GPT-5.1 model variants from ChatGPT. This includes GPT-5.1 Instant, GPT-5.1 Thinking, and GPT-5.1 Pro. Existing conversations using these models were automatically migrated to the corresponding GPT-5.3 or GPT-5.4 variants.

GPT-5.4 Leads the Pack

GPT-5.4, which launched on March 5, supports context windows up to 1.05 million tokens and reduces factual claim errors by 33% compared to GPT-5.2. It comes in three variants: Standard, Thinking (reasoning-first), and Pro (maximum capability).

Release Cadence

The retirement underscores the accelerating pace of AI model releases. The industry has moved from roughly one major release every six months in 2024 to one significant release every 72 hours in the first quarter of 2026.
