DOJ Escalates Anthropic Dispute, Calls Company 'Unacceptable' National Security Risk

The Core Dispute
The conflict centers on Anthropic's refusal to allow Claude to be used for mass surveillance of US citizens or autonomous weapons systems. The Pentagon wants "all lawful purposes" access. Anthropic says its ethical guardrails are non-negotiable.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" on March 6. He ordered military commanders to begin removing Anthropic AI from key systems, and the designation bars military contractors from doing business with the company.
Anthropic's Response
Anthropic filed two federal lawsuits in California and Washington, DC, alleging illegal retaliation. More than 30 employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind signed a public statement supporting Anthropic's legal challenge.
