AI can feel intimidating from the outside. "Neural networks", "large language models", "training data", "tokens", "parameters"—the jargon is everywhere and none of it is obviously necessary. There's an implied prerequisite: that you should understand the technology before you're allowed to use it.
This is false. And the false assumption is keeping a lot of people from tools that would genuinely help them.
What Actually Happens When You Use AI
You type something. The AI responds. You can refine it: "Make it shorter", "Explain it differently", "That's not quite right—try again." You take what's useful and ignore what isn't.
That's the full user model. Nothing else is required to get value from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or any other consumer AI tool.
The underlying technology—transformer architectures, attention mechanisms, reinforcement learning from human feedback—is genuinely fascinating if you want to go deep. But it's completely irrelevant to using these tools productively. Understanding how an internal combustion engine works doesn't make you a better driver. Understanding how a neural network works doesn't make you a better AI user.
What You Actually Need
Clear communication. The single skill that makes AI more useful is being specific. "Write a 3-paragraph executive summary of the attached report, aimed at non-technical stakeholders" produces something dramatically better than "Summarize this." You're already good at being specific—it's the same skill that makes you effective in meetings, emails, and conversations. AI just gives you a new context to apply it.
Willingness to iterate. AI rarely produces perfect output on the first try. The workflow isn't "ask once, use the answer"—it's "ask, evaluate, refine, evaluate again." The people who get the most from AI tools are the ones comfortable saying "not quite—try this instead" and going another round.
Critical evaluation. AI confidently produces incorrect information. Not always, not even usually, but it happens often enough that blind trust is a mistake. Read what AI gives you. If it's a fact you'll repeat or a recommendation you'll act on, verify it. The tool is most useful when paired with human judgment about what to take and what to discard.
The Things You Definitely Don't Need
- A computer science background
- Coding skills or familiarity with APIs
- An understanding of how models were trained
- Knowledge of what "hallucination", "token", "prompt", or "fine-tuning" means
- Knowing the difference between different AI models (you can pick whichever you try first)
The Cost of Waiting to Understand
Here's the irony: the best way to understand AI is to use it. The limitations you'll care about—what it's bad at, what kinds of prompts work, when to trust it and when to check—become obvious through use, not study. Reading about AI is much less informative than spending an hour trying things.
If you're curious, start. Understanding follows naturally. If understanding never comes—if you just keep using the thing without ever wanting to know why it works—that's completely fine too. The output is the point, not the mechanism.
