Claude Memory Feature Now Free for All Users with AI-Switching Import Tool

Anthropic expanded Claude's memory feature to all users in March 2026, dropping the $20/month subscription requirement. Memory allows Claude to retain context about users across conversations, including preferences, writing style, ongoing projects, and personal details.

How Memory Works

Claude automatically processes conversations every 24 hours, distilling information about the user's profession, language preferences, tools, and context. This means returning to Claude after a break does not require re-explaining background information.

Import Tool for Easy Switching

Alongside the memory expansion, Anthropic launched an import tool that lets users bring in conversation history and context from ChatGPT and Gemini. The goal is to lower the barrier for switching AI assistants by preserving existing knowledge and preferences.

Competitive Context

The move comes as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude all compete for daily active users. Making memory free removes one of the biggest reasons users stayed on paid plans, while the import tool directly targets users locked into competing platforms.
