Elon Musk Announces $25 Billion Terafab Chip Factory in Austin
Elon Musk took the stage at the Seaholm Historic Power Plant in Austin, Texas on March 21 and announced the largest chip manufacturing project in history. Terafab is a joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI.
What Terafab Will Build
The facility will produce two types of chips. One is optimized for edge and inference workloads, designed primarily for Tesla vehicles, robotaxis, and Optimus humanoid robots. The other is a high-power chip built for space applications and AI computing by SpaceX and xAI.
Musk said the semiconductor industry is moving too slowly to keep up with the supply of chips he expects to need. Rather than wait, he chose to build his own fabrication capacity.
Scale and Investment
Musk claims the plant will produce 1 terawatt of computing power annually. Tesla and SpaceX are investing $25 billion in the project, making it one of the most expensive private chip fabrication efforts ever attempted.
Industry Reaction
Analysts are split. Some see it as a bold move toward vertical integration. Others question whether Musk can compete with established chipmakers like TSMC and Samsung. Electrek called the announcement a sign of desperation, while TechCrunch focused on the engineering ambition behind it.
