ChatGPT expands memory with editable sources across plans

What happened

OpenAI expanded ChatGPT memory in late May 2026. For Plus and Pro users, replies are now more personalized and context aware. ChatGPT can pull from past chats, saved memories, files, and connected Gmail when that helps.

OpenAI also added memory sources across consumer plans. This lets users see which sources shaped a given reply, and edit them. The goal is more useful answers with more transparency about where the context came from.

Why it matters

Memory makes an assistant feel personal. It can recall your projects, style, and past work, which saves time. But memory also raises privacy questions. Being able to see and edit the sources behind a reply gives users more control.

This balance, helpful memory plus clear control, is becoming a key battleground among AI assistants.

MintedBrain take

Memory is powerful when it works for you and clear when you can check it. Take a few minutes to review what ChatGPT remembers and remove anything you do not want stored. Good memory hygiene keeps the tool helpful without oversharing.
