What happened

Crunchbase's H1 2026 funding report showed global venture funding hit a record $510 billion in the first six months of the year. OpenAI and Anthropic together took roughly $217 billion of that, about 43 percent of all global startup capital.

The second quarter alone recorded around $205 billion across more than 5,000 startups, the highest quarterly total ever. Crunchbase estimated that AI accounted for 65 to 70 percent of all venture capital deployed in the half.

Why it matters

Record totals mask how narrow the flow is. Two labs absorbing nearly half of global startup capital leaves far less for everyone else, including the tools and applications built on top of frontier models.

That concentration shapes which companies can afford to compete and which get starved.

MintedBrain take

Headline funding records say more about a handful of labs than about the broader market's health. When evaluating smaller AI vendors, look past the sector's totals to each company's own runway and revenue.
