What happened
Microsoft's Work IQ APIs reached general availability on June 16, following the API announcement on June 2. Work IQ is the workplace-intelligence layer that lets AI agents access, reason over and act on Microsoft 365 organizational data and tools. It grounds custom agents built in Copilot Studio, Foundry or third-party platforms in an organization's own M365 data.
There is no separate Work IQ SKU or per-user license. Instead it is billed through consumption-based Copilot Credits, with a static charge of 0.1 credit per Tool API call. Microsoft noted that administrators had to enable consumptive billing before June 16 to avoid service interruptions.
Why it matters
Grounding agents in real organizational data is what makes them useful for actual work rather than generic tasks. Offering this as an API layer lets teams build custom agents across Microsoft and third-party platforms rather than being confined to prebuilt experiences.
Consumption billing again ties agent capability directly to per-call cost, which shapes how teams design workloads.
MintedBrain take
Per-call billing rewards efficient agent design, since chatty tool usage adds up quietly across an organization. Instrument and monitor call volume from the start, confirm billing was enabled to avoid interruptions, and scope data access carefully given that agents now reach into organizational content.
